THE 51 years old has always been candid about his struggles and in line with the same, recently opened up about his mental health during a recent episode of The Pivot Podcast. Johnson revealed that he’s been through two, three bouts of depression over the years.

Remembering how he first fought depression when his college football career ended with a shoulder injury, he said that football was important to him. I didn’t want to go to school. I was ready to go. I quit school. I did not take any intermediate exams and left.

But back then, Johnson didn’t know what it was. I didn’t know what mental health era. I didn’t know what depression was. I just knew I didn’t want to be there, that I wasn’t going to any of the team meetings, I wasn’t participating in anything, he said, adding that not being able to train due to his injury made what he was going through even more difficult. as an athlete. .

He experienced his second bout of depression when he divorced his ex-wife Dany Garcia. Years later, and faced it again when I divorced. I didn’t know what she was, Johnson said.

Following the release of her podcast episode, Johnson took to Instagram to share that she’s worked hard over the years to gain the emotional tools to work through her mental pain. Each episode is treated to avoid disability-adjusted life years, complications such as suicideand also to prevent further depressive episodes, she said.

Agreeing, Dr Sachin Baliga, Consultant, Psychiatry, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru said a bout of depression is an episode in which over an extended period of time, people experience a constant sense of sadness or low mood, decreased in energy levels, feelings of lack of self-esteem and confidence, poor concentration, a strongly negative view towards things, feelings of uselessness and recurring thoughts of death. Along with this, people also experience significant changes (increase or decrease) in sleep and appetite.

Dr. Harsha shared that depression can impair attention and concentration, impair memory, and affect cognition. It can cause hopelessness, worthlessness, indecision, and if severe, it can cause suicidal thoughts and ideas, shared the psychiatrist, adding that depression can also cause some noticeable physical symptoms such as headaches, gastrointestinal symptoms, body aches, excessive fatigue or low energy, decrease or increase in sleep, decrease or increase in appetite, and various other symptoms as well.

The same when it happens all the time can put us at risk of developing hypertension, diabetes and other chronic ailments. When depressive episodes occur more than once, it’s called recurrent depressive disorder, the expert said.
